After over an hour of fruitlessly clicking and skimming through the manager’s computer with nothing more to show for it than a few thousand reservation confirmations and a series of employee evaluations, Ruby was interrupted by Millie calling her name from the front desk.

Ruby sprang up anxiously and bumped into her—wide eyed and clutching Ruby’s ringing phone—in the doorway.

“What is it? Is it a contractor?” she snapped, snatching the phone from Millie’s hands.

No sooner had Millie shaken her head than Ruby’s eyes landed on the incoming caller’s name.

Remy Bustillos. What could he want?

Ruby frowned and shot Millie a confounded look.

“Aren’t you going to answer it?” she asked uncertainly.

“After what he did to us?” Ruby snorted, glaring at the name on her phone screen but neither accepting nor rejecting the call. “Why would I? Why would I care what he has to say?”

Millie shrugged. “I don’t know. But doesn’t he work in hospitality, too? What if he has some connections that could help you out?”

Ruby had been wondering the same thing the past few days, but her pride had kept her from speaking the words out loud. But hearing them, even from Millie, whose judgment Ruby frequently found questionable—well, it was hard to argue with the logic behind them. She was desperate. And it wasn’t a terrible idea, even if asking him for another favor repulsed her.

In her hesitation, the call ended, and the room fell silent once more.

“He’s called twice already. I missed the first one, but he called back right away. That’s why I thought it might be important,” Millie explained, clearly fighting to conceal the disappointment in her bright eyes.

Instantly the phone began ringing again. With a bleak inhale, as if she were about to plunge into shark-infested waters, Ruby accepted the call and placed the phone to her ear. “Hello, Remy.”
